Just sayin Hi. Dec. 30th, 2008 @ 08:52 am
Hey everyone, I just joined this community, just wanted to introduce myself cause I'll be lurking. My boyfriend joined the coast guard back in 06. Right now he is stationed in Kodiak AK and I'll be moving up there in June 09. I remember back when he joined we were so excited and since then I've become a huge U.S. History buff and really into politics and military, just trying to get into the community more and maybe see some friendly faces down the road.

I wish I could join the coast guard, but I have asthma which disqualifies me from any branch of the military :( Other things about me, um I'm studying Mechanical Engineering and want to work on planes/jets. I road race a little Datsun, have a puppy (now big dog) who is pretty much my life. I have played guitar and wrote my own music for 7 years now. I'm super shy, but love meeting new people if that makes sense.

Coastie pride!

COMDT USCG introduces social media initiative Sep. 24th, 2008 @ 02:58 am

THIS is the project I've been working on. I really love this guy! He is so brilliant and aware of the realities around us. He is the best Commandant I've seen, and perhaps the best the Coast Guard ever has had.

Single Mom looking to join the coast guard reserve Jun. 24th, 2008 @ 06:08 pm
I know if you want to join the military and have a kid most of the time you have to give up custody before basic. I'm wondering if the same holds true for the reserve?

And would you personally recommend this branch for someone with a kid?

HELLO! Ok so in ABOUT 45 minutes my dad is going to be on the Weather Channel! There is a show called "When Weather Changed History" and this episode is about the origin of the Coast Guard rescue swimmer! My Dad just retired as the most highly decorated rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard! His first case really kicked off the rescue swimmer program. His name is Senior Chief Jeff Tunks and his part is probably going to be about 15 minutes into the show (I'm guessing at this, not for sure). So EVERYONE should watch it! It comes on at 8 pm,10 pm, and 2 am central time! If you watch it, let me know what you though! Yay I'm excited! (if you couldn't already tell from the many exclamation marks)

Hey! I'm not in  the Coast Guard but my Dad just retired after thirty years of service! Some of you may know or have heard of him! He's the most highly decorated rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard. He retired as the oldest rescue swimmer (at age 50-noone has ever been a swimmer that long). If you've seen the movie the Guardian, Kevin Costner's character is based on him. In fact, he was supposed to be in the movie but his son (my step brother) was getting married in Alaska during the week he was supposed to go to NOLA to film. I know a lot of the guys in that movie because they're not actors, they're actual coasties. During Hurricane Katrina he was out almost everyday doing rescues and was featured on the Discovery Channel and got to meet Pres. Bush because of it. If you've read "So Others May Live" by Martha LaGaurdia (sp?) chapter three is about my Dad! On March 16th at 8 pm central time, "How Weather Changed History", a show on the Weather Channel, is going to feature him. The episode is about the origin of the rescue swimmers and my Dad's first case is the case that really made people realize that the rescue swimmer program was needed. If you watch it just look for Senior Chief Tunks! Ok, so I know I brag about him a lot but he's so amazing! And he's my dad! I love him!

But I also just wanted to say THANK YOU to all of you out there! I know what you do isn't easy and I, along with a million other people, appreciated it so much!!!!

Semper Paratus!

Sad Anniversary Jan. 28th, 2008 @ 07:48 am
Twenty two years ago today, the space shuttle Challenger was destroyed after a catastrophic O-ring failure.

I was out at see on patrol about the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa (WMEC-166) in the Atlantic. I was the Quartermaster of the Watch. The captain came up to the bridge and handed me a news bulletin and told me to announce it to the ship. As I was used to cold reading, I just keyed the mic and told everyone what had happened as I was reading it for the first time. I had always been a NASA geek, and I got all chocked up by the time I had finished. All other Coast Guard Cutters were sent south to work on search and rescue efforts. We were the only cutter left up north. I would have wanted to be down there in the search. Instead I just had to read everyone else's situation reports as they came across the wire.

Hi everybody Jan. 8th, 2008 @ 07:28 pm
Just joined this community, I also just joined the Coast Guard and am leaving for basic on January 22nd. Anyone have any advice? I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I leave for Cape May, so anything and everything is appreciated.

Just added this community!! Dec. 28th, 2007 @ 02:37 pm
Hey just added this community. Pretty excited to see what everyone one is doing around the community. I am currently in AMT "A" school and wil be graduating Jan 25 '08, and be heading over to Clearwater FL. I have been in for just over 2 years. I have been stationed in San Diego, Ca for the last 2 years, 16 months of which on the CGC Sea Otter than 4 months at Airsta San Diego. Like I said I am in "A" school and about to graduate. My orders are set for C-130's but I am hoping to either transfer or dual qual. on the HH-60.

Well anyway, here I am. If anyone has any questions about Aviation "A" school or the aviation side I'd be more than happy to answer what I can.

Coast Guard Heroes Dec. 25th, 2007 @ 08:01 am
I made a Coast Guard video a while back, just for fun. I stumbled upon it yesterday and thought I would post it here for anyone who might be interested. It's just a mix and match of pics I have accumulated over the years, set to some music I like.
